Specimen Collection Instructions
Fresh stool samples should be inserted into SAF transport media or sent to the laboratory as soon as possible. Cary-Blair transport media is also acceptable.
Clinical and Interpretive
The most common intestinal reported parasites in stool specimens are Giardia intestinalis (aka Giardia duodenalis, Giardia lamblia) and Cryptosporidium species. Both parasites may cause watery diarrhea and are endemic in the United States.
