Fresh stool samples should be inserted into SAF (and PVA if possible) transport media or sent to the laboratory as soon as possible. Cary-Blair, C&S, MIF and Stuart’s transport media are also acceptable.

The most common intestinal reported parasites in stool specimens are Giardia intestinalis (aka Giardia duodenalis, Giardia lamblia) and Cryptosporidium species. Both parasites may cause watery diarrhea and are endemic in the United States.
